STARability’s new Music Academy flourishes during its inaugural year
Participants of STARability Foundation’s Music Academy recently took to the stage for a special performance at Sugarshack Downtown in Bonita Springs. Proceeds from the “music for a cause” event raised over $1,000 to benefit the nonprofit’s innovative and transformational programs that support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Guests filled the restaurant to enjoy an unforgettable live performance by STARability participants, including Ian C. on bass and vocals, Hari J. on acoustic guitar and vocals, Hannah K. on electric piano, percussion and vocals, Siddartha M. on electric piano, percussion and vocals, and Michael W. on electric guitar and vocals. Participants were joined by STARability’s Music Academy Director Lisa Barnett and music instructors Theo Bailey, Dr. Cayce Benton and Fernando Valdivia.
“As the first big event of the year for the STARability Music Academy, we were thrilled to partner with Sugarshack to share the incredible musical talents of our STARs with the community,” said Madison Nehls, Chief Program Officer of STARability Foundation. “This performance not only celebrated their hard work and dedication, but also highlighted the strength of our community – coming together to support inclusion and raise awareness.”
STARability celebrated the completion of a successful first year of its Music Academy program in early 2025 – the only music development program of its kind in Florida designed specifically for neurodiverse adults. The program’s inaugural year culminated with a Spring Recital hosted at Artis—Naples, where more than 100 guests experienced the students’ musical growth through performances in voice, guitar, piano and ensemble pieces, each reflecting their hard work, dedication and artistic progress.
“The Spring Recital was a fantastic celebration of our students’ talent and the transformative power of music,” said Nehls. “Since merging with the Southwest Florida Music Education Center, our dedicated staff have continued to grow this exceptional program, providing music education that can truly make a lasting impact on our participants’ lives.”
Launched in September 2024, the program has experienced significant growth and provides participants with an immersive and enriching experience where each participant focuses on a primary instrument, which includes piano, voice or guitar. In addition to their instrumental lessons, the curriculum at the Academy is diverse and comprehensive, covering subjects like music history, music theory, music technology, songwriting, ensemble, group singing and social skills. This well-rounded approach helps the participants grow not only as musicians but as individuals, fostering both creativity and confidence.
“The Music Academy is truly a dream come true for both participants and their families,” said Nehls. “The participants have also had the opportunity to perform at community events, one of them being our annual STAR Gala. We are excited to offer our participants a new way to express their individuality and create social connections with others who share their interests.”
The STARability Music Academy reopened its doors for the new year this fall, welcoming returning and new participants into its inclusive, individualized music education program. These continued efforts reflect STARability’s commitment to empowering all participants through meaningful access to the arts, personal growth and community connection.
